The name originates from the ancient coastal town of “Chalcis”. Chalkis is believed either that was named after the mythic creature Chalkindi that lived in the region or after the colour of copper (Greek: chalkos) that covers the area. The city is located in the Southern-West tip of South Nafpaktia geographical unit. City of Messologi is its Western border, Antirrio and Nafpaktos are the Eastern borders. Evinos River is the Northern and the Gulf of Patra is the Southern border. It belongs to the Prefecture of Aetolia-Acarnania.
