History of the former Municipality of Platanos starts in 1836 under the name “City of Proschio”. City of Proschio was named after an ancient coin that was found in Kastraki Achladokastrou (former Artotiva), with the inscription “Proschio”. Platanos is one of the most mountainous municipal units within Roumeli region and it is crossed by Evinos and Mornos rivers.
